In Hyderabad, amidst controversy surrounding the authenticity of the famous Tirupati laddu, artisans at the base of Tirumala are preparing to seek a geographical indication tag for their intricate wooden statues. For over a century, these craftsmen have been skillfully creating detailed idols of various deities, Kalyana Balaji, Raja and Rani dolls, as well as other wooden items like children's toys, doors with floral carvings, pooja mandapams, pillars, and furniture. The Sri Balaji Wood Carvings Mutually Aided Cooperative Society Limited, representing 510 artisans from 309 families, will be submitting the GI application with the assistance of NABARD. This will mark the 20th GI application from Andhra Pradesh, as stated by GI specialist Subhajit Saha who is collaborating with the artisans and NABARD to secure the tag.
